World Breastfeeding Week 2021

August is Breastfeeding Awareness Month.  The aim is to promote community and professional support for new mothers.  The month kicks off with World Breastfeeding Week, August 1st-7th.

The theme for this year's World Breastfeeding Week will focus on how breastfeeding contributes to the survival, health and wellbeing of all, and the imperative to protect breastfeeding worldwide.

The theme is aligned with thematic area 2 of the WBW-SDG 2030 campaign which highlights the links between breastfeeding and survival, health and wellbeing of women, children and nations.

The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) created World Breastfeeding Week to celebrate, promote and protect breastfeeding worldwide.

From the World Breastfeeding Week website:
"Although support at the individual level is very important, breastfeeding must be considered a public health issue that requires investment at all levels. The concept of ‘building back better’ after the COVID 19 pandemic will provide an opportunity to create a warm chain of support for breastfeeding that includes health systems, workplaces and communities at all levels of society. A warm chain of support will help build an enabling environment for breastfeeding and protect against industry influence.  It is time to inform, anchor, engage and galvanise action to protect breastfeeding at all levels."
